Working Hypothesis
Guiding research question or idea. Accepted as a basis for further research.
Null Hypothesis
the hypothesis that there is no significant difference between specified populations, any observed difference being due to sampling or experimental error
Alternative Hypothesis
One of the proposed proposition in the hypothesis test. Needed in case you reject your null hypothesis and is typically the opposite of the null hypothesis
Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium
Genotype frequencies in a population remain constant between generations in the absense of disturbance by outside factors
Allele and genotype frequencies in a population will remain constant from generation to generation in the absense of other evolutionary influences
When a population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for a gene, it is not evolving, and allele frequencies will stay the same across generations
Bottlenecks
A bottleneck is where a gene pool is significantly reduced for some reason and a relatively small diversity remains
Genetic Drift
the constant changing of allele frequencies in a population over time, due to random mating
