It is the heart of the three Abrahamic, monotheistic religions. We also know that it is currently a producer of oil in vast quantities.

What issues did the Ottoman Empire face?
A large number of different races and religions lived under Ottoman rule, which led to tensions. The difference in religious beliefs was also an issue for the empire.

The identification with one’s own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations.

Why is the Middle East such a disputed area?
It is home to various religions and, within these religions, there are subsections that tend to be the cause of tensions. The region is also home to lots and lots of oil. Some may argue that foreign involvement over history has made the Middle East disputed even more.
