Presper Eckert of the University of Pennsylvania during World War II. The machine was commissioned by the United States Army to calculate artillery firing tables. ENIAC was completed in 1945 and was capable of performing 5,000 additions, 357 multiplications, and 38 divisions in a single second. The machine weighed 30 tons, occupied 1,800 square feet of floor space, and used more than 18,000 vacuum tubes. Despite its size, ENIAC was a significant improvement over mechanical calculators and paved the way for the development of modern computers. Its success led to the development of the Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator (EDSAC) in the United Kingdom and the Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer (EDVAC) in the United States.
