• Reconstruction period begins

• Three major events during reconstruction:

  • Passing of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments

  • 13th Amendment abolished slavery

  • 14th Amendment made all persons born in the US citizens

  • 15th Amendment gave all free men the right to vote

Chapter 2: The United States

• Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery

• 14th Amendment introduced due process and made former slaves citizens

• 15th Amendment gave all men the right to vote

Chapter 3: Called Jim Crow

• Reconstruction period ends in 1877

• Democrats come to power in the south

• Jim Crow laws are passed, segregating blacks and whites

• Blacks faced inferior conditions and were separated in various aspects of life

Chapter 4: The United States

• Post-civil war economic boom

• 1873: Governments shift from silver to gold standard, causing currency devaluation

• Panic of 1873 occurs
