Welcome to Knowt!

Knowt is an app that uses AI and machine learning to help you study for your tests and quizzes by automatically turning your notes into review quizzes. This works in a few simple steps: import or type in your notes, hit the "Quiz" button in the top right-hand corner, and study! 

If you want a more in-depth explanation, this note will outline some of the general features and how to navigate Knowt. Before we get started, we wanted to let you know that Knowt is available on iOS and Android too, so you can take your studying on-the-go. Let's get started!

1. Sidebar: Notebook (The Note List)

• Sidebar: The sidebar displays all the notes you have taken. The note you're currently looking at will be highlighted (you're currently looking at "Welcome to Knowt"). 
• You can navigate through this list by simply clicking on the other notes in the list
• We've also added some test notes for you to try out to see how the app works

2. Sidebar: Buttons

• New Note Button: Pressing this button creates a new blank note. Whenever you want to start a new note for a class or topic, simply press this button and a blank note will appear.
• Import Button: This button allows you to easily import notes from your Google Drive. This allows you to easily use your notes in Knowt while preserving the original format that you typed them in.
• Hamburger Menu: Pressing this opens up more settings and file locations, like your Notebook (our name for all the notes you have), Trash (for deleted notes), Feedback, Help and about.

3. The Editor Pane and Quiz Button

• Editor Pane: The editor is the place where you'll be entering in all of your notes. 
• To learn more specifically about editing your notes, check out the section below. For a basic overview, however, this editor pane is the place where you can type in or copy your notes. From here, pressing the orange "Quiz" button will magically make your notes into quizzes!

Web Editor Features

1. Heading, Font and Size

• Heading: This button lets you select pre-formatted heading styles that are different sizes and all bold. You can use these different headings to help organize your notes. Generally, the name of your note would be in "Heading 1", the main topics in "Heading 2", the subtopics (and so on) in "Heading 3" and the text in "Normal"
• Font: This button lets you change the font your notes will be in. 
• Font Size: Changes the size of the text, letting you make your words extremely large or extremely small

2. Text and Highlight Color

• Text Color: This feature allows you to change the color of the font your notes are in. This can be useful in color-coding your notes, or changing the colors of words so that they stick out to the reader
• Highlight Color: This tool works like a highlighter, letting you change the background of the words that you choose. Sometimes, this can make words a little bit harder to see, so you can also change the text color to something brighter (like white) if the background color is too dark.You can use this to highlight areas of revision or again to color-code your notes for revision. For example, in a biology note:
  • Occurs in the cytosol = Blue
  • Occurs in the mitochondria = Orange

3. Bold, Italics, and Underline

• Bold: Add extra weight to your words to highlight key terms or concepts. Can be activated by pressing the Ctrl and B keys on your computer
• Italics: Angle your words to separate them from others. Can be activated by pressing the Ctrl and I keys on your computer
• Underline: Add a line beneath text to quickly draw attention to certain phrases. Can be activated by pressing the Ctrl and U keys on your keyboard.

4. Text Alignment and Indenting

• Text alignment changes the direction text shifts to when you are writing. Unless you specify otherwise, Knowt assumes you write with left-align
• Indenting can help you format ideas by shifting them and physically creating space between them. 

5. Ordered and Unordered Lists

• These are some of the most important features of the editor, allowing you to break your notes down into manageable chunks
• Ordered Lists: These lists use numerals or letters to help sort information out. Take the example below for the steps of simple circuit analysis in Physics:

1. Identify the voltage source
2. Identify series and parallel branches and their respective resistors
3. Find the equivalent resistance of the circuit using the rules for series and parallel resistors
4. Use Ohm's Law (V = IR) to find the TOTAL current of the circuit
5. Use the current to find the voltage drop across each resistor, again using V = IR

• Unordered Lists: These lists are simply bulleted and do not need to follow a certain pattern

6. Quotes, Links and Horizontal Lines

• Quotes: Quotes can be used to separate text out from a larger block of text, or show an example of what you may have been explaining. You could always use them to display actual quotes too:

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take

        - Wayne Gretzky"

        - Michael Scott

• Links: While links won't show up in quizzes, you can link your text to different sites, like study guides or images, that you might use. You can activate this by pressing the Ctrl and K keys on your keyboard. (These links for iOS and Android lead you to app stores, where you can leave a review if you like our app so far!)
• Horizontal Lines: These lines can help create larger distinctions in your text, which can be useful in separating chapters of notes, for example.

7. Print, Clear Formatting, and Undo/Redo

• Print: The notes you import into Knowt can also be printed for you to take with you when you might not have your devices with you
• Clear Formatting: Press this button to get rid of ALL formatting on text, removing all font, color, list, etc. formatting on it
• Undo/Redo: Use these to navigate between changes on your notes

8. A List of Helpful Shortcuts

• These shortcuts can be activated by pressing the Control Key (Ctrl) on Windows or Command Key (⌘ ) on Mac-OS with the appropriate key at the same time:
  • Copy    ⌘C
  • Cut    ⌘X
  • Paste    ⌘V
  • Undo    ⌘Z
  • Redo    ⌘Shift+Z or ⌘Y
  • Insert Link    ⌘K
  • Select All    ⌘A
  • Bold    ⌘B
  • Italic    ⌘I
  • Underline    ⌘U
  • Strikethrough    ⌘S
  • Increase Indent    ⌘]
  • Decrease Indent    ⌘[
  • Increase quote level    ⌘'
  • Decrease quote level    ⌘Shift+'

Mobile Editor Features

1. Bold

Bold: Add extra weight to your words to highlight key terms or concepts. Can be activated by pressing the B and then typing, or by typing out your notes, highlighting the desired portion and pressing the B.

2. Italics

Italics: Angle your words to separate them from others. Can be activated by pressing the I and then typing, or by typing out your notes, highlighting the desired portion and pressing the I .

3. Underline

Underline: Add a line beneath text to quickly draw attention to certain phrases. Can be activated by pressing the U and then typing, or by typing out your notes, highlighting the desired portion and pressing the U.

4. Body Text and Header Text

Text: This function sets the typing mode to body text (like this) and is what the majority of your notes should be in.

Header: This function sets the typing mode to header text. This can be used to separate your text into different sections by topic.

5. Highlighter

Highlighter: This tool can be used to highlight areas of revision or for you to color-code your notes for revision. Sometimes, this can make words a little bit harder to see, so you can also change the text color to something brighter (like white) if the background color is too dark.

6. Text Color

Text Color: This feature allows you to change the color of the font your notes are in. This can be useful in color-coding your notes, or changing the colors of words so that they stick out to the reader. Simply tap the A and select the desired color from the drop-down menu.
